Abade Vasco Moreira

Vasco de Almeida Moreira was born in Sernancelhe in 30th September of 1879, son of the tailor Francisco Joaquim de Almeida and Maria dos Prazeres Moreira. He attended the Jesuit School in the Sanctuary of Lapa, from 1893 to 1898, changing then to Lamego Highschool, where he had outstanding academic results.

Afterwards he attended the Seminary in the same city where he studied theology, where he became a priest in 22nd September 1901. According to his Bishop view he had an “effusive temper” and “didn’t deal with his fame very well”. In August 1914 he becomes priest of the parish S. João de Tarouca. According to Leite de Vasconcelos, the ruins of his parish monastery motivated his interest in archeology and history. Without disregarding their parishioners, the spontaneous literary inclination, directed particularly to historical investigation, would influence all his future life.

He was teacher of Archeology in the Seminary of Lamego, a course created to respond to the need of the Prelate regarding the priests’ training, with the purpose of acknowledging the value of the rich cultural heritage of the bishopric, many of this heritage lost to foreign collections.

In that time, Vasco Moreira had already published valuable monographic works, of historical nature as a result of his intensive work and serious critic. In 1911 he is nominated Head of the Regional Museum of Art and Archeology, established by the bishop D.Francisco José, but he abdicates in 1915 due to political questions. He also taught in Mondim da Beira and he was mayor of Tarouca.
He also belonged to the Portuguese Association of Archeology, to the Historical Institute of Minho and the Ethnological Institute of the Beira.
He passed away in 19th September 1932.
